Background: The thrid son of a noble from the Hundred Kingdoms, Kuni's inheritance was a horse, a set of armor, a sword and a bag of silver. Wishing to avoid the court intrigues that often poisoned family relations, he rode West, selling his skill at arms for good (or neutral) causes, or fighting for people too weak to defend themselves. His exaltation happened when he came across a small group of travelers desperately fighting a Fair Folk raiding party. A girl among the group was cornered and wounded, when Luna decided to Exalt her, and the sight stirred ancient memories in his soul. Blazing golden light, Kuni raced to help the girl, and together they fought off the hobgoblins and the two Fae leading them.

Kuni and the girl (Ahana) were tending to each other's wounds and trying to make sense of what had happened, when the Silver Pact came to take her away. The older Lunar thanked the young man for protecting the "new cub", but was clear that he could not come along. Not yet, at least. "There will be time for you to prove your mettle, Ascending Sun. Until that day, you do not belong with her." Kuni is not sure what the Lunar meant, but accepted those words. A while later, he woke up in his makeshift camp to find his new weapon and armor laid out beside his bedroll.

At night, just before he falls asleep, his thoughts drift back to Ahana, the strange bonding feelings in his soul towards her, and the words of her Lunar teacher before she was taken away.
